mir tips from driving between Anchorage and Seattle multiple times
Being born and raised in Alaska, and having friends in other parts of the USA, I (henceforth: i) often want to travel between both places. Air travel is the quickest, and with a little planning will be least expensive in the long run. it's also a hurry-up-and-wait affair, physically uncomfortable (especially for those of us whose bodies barely fit in standard 747 seats), and doesn't let you bring much stuff with you. for moving apartments or trading your cheap computers with your Cascadian friends' cheap computers, it really is best to just Drive. I've done this a few times, solo, and tonight I'm gonna tell you about it.
Palmer AK
When driving down from Anchorage, this is the last true civilization with chain grocery stores before the Yukon expanse. less than an hour north of Anchorage (technically if you go the speed limit it's slightly more - and also depends where in anchorage). no worries going between them, i knew people who did that drive every day.
Glenallen AK
This is the official endpoint of the Glenn Highway, which starts as 5th and 6th Avenues in downtown Anchorage and runs vaguely North-South. It has a gas station or two? Not really a place so much as a junction to be honest, and it's only half a day north.
Tok AK
This town owned entirely by Three Bears Alaska, AKA that Costco reseller. They have warehouse stores in Chugiak and Palmer as well as Tok. Their motel is fine, the store is fine. the chevron gas station is a good spot to fill up, and their convenience store has the white cheddar Chex mix and 1L mtn dew, which i get because i am a fool with no self control. When sticking to six-hour driving days or if nervous about canada entry, this is a good place to call it a night - otherwise I recommend crossing the border and staying in Beaver Creek.
US-Canada border Alcan outpost
note for all border crossing testimonies: I am a white trans woman who passes 60% of the time, and during the time these interactions took place my voice was deeper and my passport said Male and showed me clean shaven but pre-HRT. Even if your situation is identical to mine, every week is a new chance for the border agents of either country to suddenly get paranoid about gender. I travel at my own risk and none of my experiences should be used as evidence against the widespread attacks on trans rights taking place across the USA. Thank you.
leaving AK, entering YT
The canadian border cop just wants to make sure you'll be okay on the journey, and have enough money and time to properly rest and not get stuck on your journey. The idea being to get you thru canada as efficiently as reasonable.
entering AK, leaving YT
The alaska border cop is extremely chill, usually he just glances at passport, makes a smalltalk, and waves u thru.
Beaver Creek YT
Right on the backside of the Yukon border outpost. The building on the north/east side of the road with the gas station is also a motel. Pre-booking this motel gets u the room right next to front door, which I personally found suboptimal because im shy in unfamiliar places. subpar but exotic snack selection; they do also sell hoodies. I'd recommend to always gas up here.
Burwash Landing YT
allegedly exists, has a gas station. ive never bothered stopping, but they do have cell service (!).
Haines Junction YT
Not to be confused with Haines AK. At the crossroads, turn left for the rest of canada or right for haines ak (nice place, if only to catch the ferry because its booked everywhere else). Gas station on the north/east of the alaska highway has good snacks, and breakfast burritos in the morning. i always stay at Cozy Corner motel directly opposite, it's cozy. they also serve dinner, as do the other motels in town.
Whitehorse YT
Civilization! i usually stop here to get lunch at A%W. The Canada version of that restaurant is nice, and the menu is completely different than the American one. This might be good to stock up on gas and water, there's stations on the north side of town. Kind of a liminal location.
Teslin YT
Perpetual road construction. The gas station on the east side of the road, just north of the bridge, has motel rooms. I recommend their chicken wrap for dinner. the motel bathrooms are slippery when wet, so watch out for that. very nice tho!
Wastson Lake YT
30min detour but worth it if baby nugget is closed. Andrea's Hotel is quite nice, get their salad. menu says they also have bubble tea but they didn't when i checked.
Jade City YT
The rock store has water bottles and a B%B. the rooms are in the trailer shack on the left, they're a queen bed and nothing else. shared bathroom with a separate key. paper thin walls, same material as on passenger airplane linings. Since it's a "bed and breakfast", a boiled egg and sealed fruit bowl and muffin are included with the price of a night. Due to the aformentioned shyness I wasn't all that confident staying here, but one could do worse in a pinch.
Dease Lake BC
The gas station 'convenience store' is actually a whole entire grocery store with semi fresh fruit and meat. allegedly there are two hotels nearby. worth checking out if stops align. definitely fill up on snacks and fuel.
Red Goat Lodge
make a reservation or they will be full when you arrive! rooms are nice but it's a walk. drinks for sale maybe but if they serve food i can't imagine where. don't trust the innkeepers to be present consistently, or clean their microwaves (mine had a half eaten slice of supreme pizza still in there from the last guest, and it took every ounce of self-restraint i had not to eat it).
Tattogga Lake Resort
run by one guy who is very nice but not super on the ball. will let u use his phone if you look lost. not open year round (?). i want to pay him back for getting my pronouns right, so if you have the opportunity please go say hi and buy a water bottle from him.
Bell Two
Nice people. old school gas pumps, mind the mechanism. buy a water or two while inside.
Meziadin Junction
The lodging is dorms and the food is a cafeteria. avoid if you have any social anxiety, which I do. place is meant for truckers, not us. Great gas station tho, very fun snack selection. but only opens at 7am (? maybe 8? definitely not 24/7 as google claims).
New Hazelton BC
One or two motels, good, Asian restaurant, also good. I didn't check out the Subway but it's probably exactly like every Subway restaurant. get gas.
Smithers BC
Has an A%W !!! so you know where im stopping for lunch.
Houston BC
motel was nice. civilized gas station. I always try to give Tim Hortons a chance, but it's always mid so i should probably stop bothering huh.
Prince George BC
Real actual town with airport and people and a yarn store. street parking is bad there. reminds me of Anchorage in a way. If i move to canada there's a 50/50 chance it'll be here, i like the vibes and it's only a whole entire day's drive to Vancouver.
Hundred Mile House BC
has an A%W!!! motel's also good, but their web reservation form is weird. just leave the rv part blank if you're not trying for an rv campsite.
Abbotsford-Sumas border outpost
leaving BC, entering WA
30min wait. they do some light grilling. only say true things, and say them confidently.
entering BC, leaving WA
30min wait. how long are you going to be in canada, how did you meet whomever youre meeting up with, what the fuck is a fediverse. be prepared to explain the math of how a 42 hour drive takes a whole week, and what happened to make you hesitate saying no to "have you ever been arrested".
Sumas WA
gas station store guy gave me a funny look. sumas mountain lodge is nice but the stairs are creaky. Google Maps has a weeeeird route between here and Seattle.
